A juvenile delinquent is a person under the age of 18 who has committed a crime and has been taken into custody, charged and adjudicated for that crime. Delinquency itself is socially inadequate adjustment on the part of the individual to difficult situations. This article reviews research on the personal characteristics of youth that predispose to crime, focusing on the biosocial origins of antisocial behavior. Juveniles can be charged as adults for more serious crimes depending on state laws, prior convictions and the severity of the crimes committed.
